Fissures is the sound of lake ice cracking underfoot. Once the recording was amplified, I learned that the ice hadn’t cracked a few times during the two minutes and forty seconds of recording, but was cracking almost continuously, beyond my aural threshold. The existence of the negative describes the threshold for what we detect through the use of technological device, as absent presences. How do we, as inhabitants of space, affect the formation of these absent presences?
